Ten days is close to the sweet spot for a first trip to Sri Lanka: enough time to properly cover the Cultural Triangle, the hill country, a wildlife safari and a beach finish, without spending half the trip in transit. Here's a realistic route, close to what we build for most first-time guests.

Days 1–2: Arrival and Sigiriya

Land in Colombo and head straight for the Cultural Triangle, stopping at Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage on the way. Base yourself near Sigiriya for two nights — one to climb the rock itself, the other for the Dambulla cave temples and a village tour by bullock cart.

Days 3–4: Kandy

Move on to Kandy for the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, an evening cultural dance show, and a morning at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya.

Days 5–6: The hill country

From Kandy, head up into tea country around Nuwara Eliya, then take the scenic train (or continue by road) to Ella for the Nine Arch Bridge and a walk up to one of the viewpoints.

Days 7–8: Wildlife safari

Continue south to Yala or Udawalawe for an early-morning 4x4 safari — this is where a private driver-guide who knows the park really pays off, since timing your entry right after gates open makes a real difference to sightings.

Days 9–10: South coast and departure

Finish with a couple of nights on the south coast — Galle Fort is worth an afternoon, and Bentota or Mirissa give you a proper beach day before flying home from Colombo.

Why this order works

Following the island roughly clockwise from Colombo means you're never backtracking over the same roads, and it naturally moves you from the hottest, driest region (the Cultural Triangle) into cooler hill country and back down to the coast — a comfortable temperature curve rather than a jarring one.

How to adapt this route

Ten days is flexible: drop the safari and add a second beach stop for a more relaxed pace, or swap Ella for Trincomalee if you're travelling in the months the east coast is drier. This exact route is close to our Sri Lanka Grand Explorer package, which we tailor to your dates and interests rather than running as a fixed departure.
